What is SecondLife (SL)?

Welcome to Second Life (SL):

In 2nd Life I am known as "DeadheadDMT Infinity". And I am here to tell you what SL is and what you can do inside it.

SL is not a game. There are no game goals, and no game rules. Although there are games you can play in SL.

SL is not a chat room. Although you can chat with other avatars around the world. But chatting is such a small part of SL because SL is so much more!!!

SL is a virtual enviroment created by Linden Labs and contains within it, 1000's of individual simulated worlds (sims) created by the people who use SL. 3D avatars, landscapes, and architecture along with script programmed objects, and streaming audio/video make this an adventure like none other. Not a separate cyberworld, but rather a cyber-extension of the Real Life (RL) world, and you can do just about anything in SL that you can do in RL.

SL is so extensive that RL big companies are building their own conference halls and training locations so that they can use the SL environment instead of having to pay airline costs and convention center rental costs in order to meet with their corporate officers, employees and clients. In SL they can all sit in beautiful plush luxury and conduct meetings and presentations using streaming audio/video and yet still be able to communicate to each other just as they would in RL while sitting in an office or amphitheater in real time.

In SL you can do so many things. Popular musicians have begun doing streaming audio/video concerts to filled cyber concert halls. There are many commercial districts where you can shop and buy items for use in SL using the SL unit of currency called Lindens. There is even an monetary exchange system where you can convert SL Lindens to RL dollars or vice versa. Many SL users sell commodities and products and have SL jobs and professional functions.

There are even SL versions of RL colleges and educational institutions. I myself, am a teacher at one of the many SL schools. I teach 3D SL object building and SL script programming to make the objects your build there move and perform various functions. I sometimes teach how to use SL building/scripting tools, and even how to do most any kind of RL world subject like webdesign or PHP programming. There are some who even teach RL domestic skills like cooking and crafts.

In the course of a single day I have gone jetskiing, skydiving, scuba diving, sailing, flying, motorcycle riding, club dancing, island exploring, shopping, taken classes on a variety of subjects and then spent the evening at a beautiful japanese water garden learning tai chi.

Sl is free to download www.secondlife.com and free to participate. The only time it costs money is if you decide that you actually want to own some land and create your own sim environment. The diversity and scope of the environments you can find in SL are awesomely inspiring and beautiful. There are sims that tailor to specific hobbies and interests like Darkstar, a Grateful Dead fan and general hippie sim. There are sims with shopping malls that sells more than you could imagine, and there are residential sims that have condos, houses, apartments, and flats for rent and use by SL residents. There are some sims that are dedicated to various art like museum sims and sculpture art sims. And then there are sims that defy any classification by any normal standards are have to be seen to be understood.

Since I joined SL, many other family members have joined as well. We actually meet and communicate more in SL than we do in RL because it is so much more convenient and entertaining. Perhaps a shared cup of coffee at a coffee house in the Liverpool sim, or a tour of the Eiffel tower in the Paris sim, or maybe a family archery tournament at an outdoor sports sim, or maybe just a picnic on a breathtaking beach watching the sun set over the water.

All this just barely cover the tip of the iceberg that is the vastness of SL. It is a way for people to meet and talk and share in environments just like in RL. It is a way for the handicapped and disabled to do things that they can not do in RL. It is a place to learn many subjects from many learning institutions. It is a place to conduct business in way never before available. It is so much more that it cannot be explained in a few paragraphs and may take years to find and experience all that it has to offer.

Yes, I am an SL addict. I knew I was from the first moment I entered, and I have loved every moment that I have been in SL. You simply will not believe your eyes, ears, and emotions as you travel through the various sim landscapes and concepts. Perhaps I will see you there. SL is the start of a whole new understanding of life and the human species, or other species if you prefer as you are not limited to only being a human avatar. The choice is yours to be whatever you want to be and experience whatever you want to experience. It is all here ready for you in SECOND LIFE!!! ENJOY!!!!

The LINDENLAB PRIZE:

SecondLife held a contest this past year (2009) called the LindenLab Prize which is oriented towards rewarding ideas that not only improve the quality of SecondLife but Real Life as well. I submitted this idea as an entry to that contest.
I did not win; in fact I did not even make the top 10; mostly I think because the idea was purely conceptual and did not actually already exist in SL.
Here is information regarding my entry:

SL/RL World Justice & Mediation Center (or World Association Forum, International People's Court or whatever name you want to call it, although the idea of a 'people's court concept was the spark for this idea)

ABSTRACT:
Please provide a brief summary of your project, its goals and its impact. Limit 200 words.

In these days where the world is becoming smaller and we have faster interactive communications, we find ourselves confronted more easily with interpersonal conflicts and disagreements. A prelude to a ONE WORLD concept is the establishment of a ONE WORLD forum of justice and mediation. I propose the "SL/RL World Justice & Mediation Center" (only a proposed name to convey an idea similar to television's People's Court but on a grander global scale), as a tool to offer patrons RL/SL a place where they can come before an assembled or elected set of world judges, and a united human jury, to air grievances, as well as a place to apply for 3rd party advice and mediation from global specialists and every day peers.

DESCRIPTION:
Please describe your project in more detail. Be sure to include why you and your project should be considered for the Linden Prize. Limit 600 words.

The internet has brought people together from around the world. We no longer only have friends that simply live in our local community but have expanded to a global social circle. With any human interaction comes inevitable conflict and disagreement of ideas, and ambitions. SL/RL World Justice & Mediation Center would be a place where not only individuals could bring their differences into the public eye, but is also expandable to a world wide forum for communities, regions, states, and even nations. It would be a place where issues are brought to the entire populous and not limited to the closed door sessions in institutions of the world social order. From the smallest dispute of justice to the global mediation and input interaction of the entire human condition, ideas could be expressed and debated by a larger group of individuals. Rules and regulations regarding the creation and ongoing development of the idea would be from a consensus of the world population and could eventually lead to a global constitution of law and order where the response is as a unified voice for the entire planet. This project should be developed so that we can minimalize our own personal problems and focus on global issues in a way that reflects the common consciousness and therefore would be a noble contender for the worldwide teaching of peace and a strong candidate for consideration of the LINDENLAB PRIZE.

SCOPE and PURPOSE:
Initially conceived as a place where SL residents could find help in solving disagreements with other SL residents. These disputes could involve acts of griefing, intellectual property rights violations, interpersonal relationships, etc. I am not a current SL sim landowner, so when I thought of the idea, I put it on a back burner until such time as I could afford a sim and develop the idea more completely. With the announcement of the LINDENLAB PRIZE, I saw the opportunity to not only develop the idea, but moreover, to expand it to a level that could indeed reach both SL and RL.

It does not exist in SL as a place yet, but the building complex is pretty straight forward, and a sim anywhere could be bought or set aside and government type buildings and grounds would be established on it whereby residents could come, file their grievances, and be assigned a date to which to appear. Sessions would be administrated by some sort of assembly judge or mediator figure, and SL residents themself could be the acting witness jury... so to speak...

Testimony between the disputing parties would be examined and a collective verdict by the body jury submitted.

The initial concept was very simple in nature and really held no legal jurisdiction but was more an idea of community fun since many people are fascinated by court room shows on television.

With the advent of the LINDENLAB PRIZE... I found myself expanding on the idea, and that it could be a starting point for something much greater than the people within SL itself... and could conceivable expand to be part of that which ultimately unites the peoples of the world in a new and unique fashion whereby many more could have access and input to issues which affect us all in the world.

Continuing in that line of thought, this SL/World Justice & Mediation Center (or other name), could be a primary brick in the building of a society that takes into account all earth residents and gives them the ability to know more about the world we all live in as well as participate in the future direction of mankind.

I believe that the future of our world lies in a global unity or ONE WORLD, and that the central focus of that unity will be via electronic media, where we as a whole planet can debate and resolve issues that we all face. Our future ONE WORLD government will be housed in the realm of cyberspace, and we would vote for our leaders and the collective issues that affect us as a whole society.

I think that the establishment of a central point of world justice and collective social mediation from which to examine world issues, and that is accessable to everyone would be a good place to start bringing our world closer together.

A journey of a 1000 miles begins with a first step... perhaps this is the step we are looking for and we can have a united peaceful future to look forward to for our children's, children's, children.

Proposed Initial Setup & Outline of Services:
(this concept is in a continual state of development and expansion and this information subject to change without notice)

Setup and Creation Process:
A sim would be set up and buildings erected. Either a single multi-department building or a building complex on lush grounds with each building serving a different part of the court/mediation process. One building for Administrative services, another building for individual registration to the association and still another building for SL issues and one for RL issues.

Applications for justice/mediation could be by notecard drop boxes and the info set to a schedule when the case could be presided over by the associate judges and registered members of the human assembly.

My Brief Biography

A Real Life engineering electronics technician, computer programmer, graphic artist, and website designer, I enjoy a SecondLife existence as a teacher with the SL based school; Institute for Cooperative Education (ICE), and I teach a variety of classes on building, scripting, SL topics, and RL topics (in development). I am interested in the human condition and I promote a self made idea that I call "The TEACH PEACE Project" that uses the commonalities found in our many languages as a bridge to promote peace on the planet. Not merely a passive act of wishing someone peace or saying to someone “be at peace”, but rather an active, ongoing, persistent teaching of the peace concept to everyone encouraging and reminding them to in turn TEACH PEACE to others as well. If we all are TEACHING PEACE then we are closer to being a united ONE WORLD planet.

DeadheadDMT Infinity

BURNING LIFE:

Burning Life is the SL equivalent to the BURNING MAN FESTIVAL which happens every year in the Arizona Desert. 10's of thousands of people all gather together in the middle of the desert, away from everyone, bringing everything they need to survive for a month as they setup, create and make a city of art in the wilderness.... after the festival is over.... there is a large party where they burn a large effigy of a wooden man, thus it is called the Burning Man Festival. When the festival is over and everyone has gone home... NO TRACE LEFT BEHIND... there is no evidence left in the desert that such an event ever happened.

Info about the Burning Life festival The Burning Life festival covers 22 complete sims, with an average of about 16 artist campsites of various sizes for each sim. That equals about 350 different campsites and artist environments which include image art, animations, sculptures, music, dancing, interactive media, streaming videos, dj's, political and social statement projects, parties, strange and bizarre displays, and much, MUCH more!!!

My first Burning Life festival was in 2007 when I first joined SL. I have never been to an actual Burning Man festival, but I feel like I have since the SL version is exactly like it in so many ways.

I was able to take many pictures of all the fantastic art and sculpture and conceptual items that were presented for 2008. Here are presented over 2000 images from the festival which cover about 98% of the campsites that were on display. I spent a lot of time taking pictures and still I was not able to get to a couple of the sites before they tore their displays down for the year. But I think I probably got every campsite except for maybe 6 - 10 out of all the campsites that were there.

Metabolt SL Text ONLY Interface

Currently my video card has died and I only have computer use through my SAFE MODE. But, if you don't need to view the SL graphics, or you are having problems with your video card and still need to communicate with people in SL, then Metabolt may be the program for you. It allows you to access many of the functions that you would use with SL without actually having to 'be' there...

Your avatar is actually there..... but you only see a regular white window like a windows file folder window, that has a number of tab options. You can chat, give items, pay people, even rez objects or other such features.... you simply cannot see them. I have uploaded here some of the images from the Metabolt interface so you can see how it works.

Click on the images to see a larger version of them... and I will try to explain some of the features next to each image...

This is the opening page for the Metabolt interface. It allows you to login to SL using your Username and Password. You can also choose the grid you want to login to.
Whatever you are wearing that normally sends you messages when you are actually inside SL still sends you messages when you are only using Metabolt.
You have access to normal/multiple IM windows to like you would if you were actually inside SL. (technically you ARE in SL, and everyone can see you, although it has been reported that your avatar looks pale, kind of like Data from Star Trek.
You have complete access to your Friends list, so you can IM whoever you choose just like you would normally in SL.
You also have access to your inventory. Your regular inventory default folders like Animations, Textures, Photo Album, etc., are there but they are intermixed alphabetically with your own folders.
You even have a few animations, and some limited controls from the pull down menu when you are using Metabolt.... including an animation for 'Fall on Face'... ROTFLMAO!!!
You can look at the list of objects that are around you by name. You can even interact with them like SIT, or Turn To, or Pay, etc.
There is a pull down menu so you can set the range of objects that you want to look at from 15 meters to 100 meters. That way you can keep the list short if there are many objects around you.
Metabolt allows you access to the Inworld SEARCH window as well. There are some limitations in that you cannot choose your parameters like Public, Mature, & Adult, but you can still find most anything you need the same as if you were inside SL.
Metabolt also lets you see some of the general SL stats for the area/sim you are in.
You can also Teleport to other sim area on the grid by searching in the same way as you can from the inworld MAP function. I did notice that the MAP menu option at the top of the screen was not able to show me a picture of the sim... I don't know if it was just not working at the time I tested it, or if it was an actual bug in the program.

ALL in ALL, it provides a lot of nice features whether you choose not to see graphics or if you computer limits your use of graphics in some way. The experience of course is changed to a great degree because of the lack of graphics, but sometimes if you just need to communicate or share items, or check profiles, online statuses, or other 'non-graphic' functions then Metabolt seems to be a good choice in helping you interact with SL without 'actually' being there (although your avatar is).

My SL Projects

The Grateful Dead-opoly SL Board Game

About 20 years ago or so, before the internet became the World Wide Web, there was a chat room inhabited mostly by deadheads called 'The Well'. There was no fancy text or graphics... just words and the ability to download documents that other users had uploaded.

During that time I downloaded a set of documents that someone had created. These documents outlined the idea of a Monopoly sytle board game based on the Grateful Dead music group. Instead of collecting real estate, as one would do in regular Monopoly, this game proposed the idea of collecting concert tapes from various Grateful Dead concerts through the years from both the East and West Coast concert venues.

The original game concepts like 'Chance' and 'Treasure Chest' cards for the game were changed to 'Kind' and 'Tour' cards of various good and bad fortune. Also some of the original game spaces like 'Waterworks', 'Electric Company' and 'Luxury Tax' were changed to spaces reflecting the Grateful Dead culture concepts like 'T-Shirt Vending', 'Day Job', or 'Traffic Jam'.

I fell in love with the concept game that I had downloaded from 'The Well' and have kept them in my possesions for this long 20 years +... but it wasn't until the finding of SecondLife (SL) that I finally found the vehicle in which to create the game as it should be.

I am currently creating and developing all the various aspects of the game so that it can be played by up to 8 players in SL. I have most of the graphics done, and now I am working on the programming/scripting interface to make the game work.

When finished I hope it to be a truly wonderful and fun game to play with other Grateful Dead enthusiasts (deadheads). There is still much work to do on making it playable. The programming/Scripting is complex and has many linked objects communicating to each other to store the various player and turn data during game play.
